Cycle Cardiff comments on city centre infrastructure

Cardiff Council are planning an investment in city centre cycling infrastructure as part of the next phase of the city’s transport strategy, and it appears as if the new power-sharing executive is more committed to sustainable transport modes.

At our June meeting, we discussed the priorities for the development of cycling facilities through the city centre and have now delivered our findings to the council. We would welcome further input on these issues and will bear them in mind in future consultations. Cycle Cardiff and this website can hopefully provide a forum within which these views can be discussed and wider consultation can occur.

In brief, our discussions threw up a number of core points which we hope the council will prioritize. (more…)

Never mind the Sheffield stand

Full version of standA designer at UWIC has come up with a new bicycle stand to deal with some of the common security problems experienced by cyclists. As all Cardiff cyclists will be aware, parking in the city is a bit patchy, and some of the stand formats are less than adequate, in particular the curly-wurly stands. (more…)

Shared space

Postgraduate students at the Cardiff University School of City and Regional Planning are looking into the pros and cons of shared space: an alternative way of looking at urban design. David Jeffery has kindly made available this brief summary of the core concepts, and has also offered to keep us informed of the outcomes of the research.

‘Shared space is used to describe an emerging approach to urban design, traffic engineering and road safety’ (Hamilton-Baillie). At the heart of the concept is the integration of vehicle users, pedestrians and cyclists in the same space. This is seen to contrast with post-war transport polices which corresponded with, and reacted to, the growth of the motor car and increased vehicular speeds. (more…)

John Franklin’s talk

Our well-attended March meeting was given over to a talk by John Franklin, author of Cyclecraft. John has very kindly made available a copy of his talk in transcript form which I have posted as an article on the website. Click here to read. I would urge people to read the transcript of this highly thought-provoking talk.

Following John’s paper there was an animated question and answer session. His views have not, I’m sure, inspired universal agreement, but, in my view, John’s opinions are an extremely welcome contribution to a wider debate about cycling infrastructure and long-term planning for sustainable transport. Comments can be left in response to John’s talk, and opinions would be welcome. Similarly, these can go on the forum.

Cardiff Cycling Strategy

The proposed new Cardiff Cycling Strategy has been on the horizon for well over a year. Some of you may remember that the old draft was queried in many respects by the Cardiff Cycling Campaign. This led to a review by the council, new recommendations, and a later draft ostensibly taking into account the points raised. After a lengthy wait, Cardiff Council has recently adopted a new Cardiff Cycling Strategy which is available for download.

Click here to view the complete strategy document.

Comparing this version with the old draft, there are some additions that most regular cyclists in Cardiff will welcome. (more…)
