Sustainable transport a priority for our capital

The opportunity to grill Cardiff’s local politicians over green transport drew a big crowd to Cardiff’s Norwegian Church on Monday 17 March. Councillors Delme Bowen (Plaid Cymru), Bob Derbyshire (Labour), and Mark Stephens (Liberal Democrats) shared a platform with Jake Griffiths (prospective Green candidate) and the evening’s chairperson Vinny Mott of Sustrans. Monday 24 March (Easter Monday)

Llancaiach Fawr. Meet 10.00–10.15 on the Bute Park side of the Sophia Gardens footbridge. This ride will follow the trail up to Pontypridd, but then cut across on-road to Nelson. We’ll stop for snacks and a brief exploration of Llancaiach Fawr stately home. John Franklin’s talk

Our well-attended March meeting was given over to a talk by John Franklin, author of Cyclecraft. John has very kindly made available a copy of his talk in transcript form which I have posted as an article on the website. Click here to read. I would urge people to read the transcript of this highly thought-provoking talk.

Following John’s paper there was an animated question and answer session. His views have not, I’m sure, inspired universal agreement, but, in my view, John’s opinions are an extremely welcome contribution to a wider debate about cycling infrastructure and long-term planning for sustainable transport. Comments can be left in response to John’s talk, and opinions would be welcome. Similarly, these can go on the forum.
